Floor vs Table?
I have returned to building more Star Wars-inspired Lego dioramas. More about that later…
And as I have done since I was a kid, I work on the floor. I have always built my Lego sets while sitting on the floor even though the Lego directions indicate building on a table is the preferred location. Tables pose a problem, however. There’s usually a whole lot of stuff on it and I don’t want to spend my time clearing a space. In addition, as a kid, sitting on the floor and building with bricks for hours on end was no problem. But now, after a few hours on the floor, it’s no longer a very comfortable position. My legs fall asleep and my back hurts, etc. I’m not sure how much longer I can continue on the floor.
So, anyone else out there still prefer the floor to a table for building with their Lego bricks?

As you can see, my current build involves quite a bit of white as it takes place on the ice planet, Hoth. That’s all I’ll say at the moment. My goal is to finish this for BrickFair in August. Lots more still to do…

BrickFair Wrap-Up
@BrickFair was just fabulous! It was my first Lego convention and there was so much to see. I arrived on Thursday afternoon, well after others had started to arrive and set up their MOCs (My Own Creation). “Pizza Day on the Death Star” belonged in the Movie/TV/Book section but there wasn’t any more room for my big MOC on the tables set aside for the theme. Thankfully, there were others around to help. This was especially good because I wasn’t the only one trying to add my MOC to the area. We soon got permission to basically take over two nearby tables.
I set up “Pizza Day” near Jedi Jack’s MOCs with Star Wars and Harry Potter scenes. Jedi Jack is 8 years old and came with his dad, Evan. I didn’t really see them again until the public days on Saturday and Sunday when we sat with our creations during the day. And by then, the two tables were chock full of Lego displays from other enthusiasts. Most of those folks didn’t sit with their MOCs so I didn’t get to know them as well as Jedi Jack and Evan.
I spent most of Thursday evening and all day Friday with the PennLUG members who were busy setting up the most awesome train display EVER! And to their cause, I lent a small car and a couple of baseplates. Since I’d never seen the display before, I provided fairly limited help. However, I did place quite a few minifigures throughout the town (after all the buildings and sidewalks had been placed. Later, I did some landscaping along an abandoned section of tracks. My photos don’t convey just how large this display was. I wish I had actually measured it…I’m guessing it was about 20 feet wide and 35 feet long but I could be way off here. Let me just say it was BIG!
Saturday was very busy. I heard the line to get in wrapped twice around the building! I had a primo spot, just to the left of the entrance. There was a constant stream of people past my MOC. I enjoyed watching people’s faces light up as they read the title of my display. Some would call over their friends and families to make sure they saw it. People smiled and said things like “That’s great!” “This is my favorite!” and “Awesome” mixed with some laughter. They liked it - very gratifying.
Sunday was noticeably less busy but still a lot of people came and smiled. When there was a break in the line of people filing by, others rushed in to fill the gap. In the end, over 16,000 people came through the doors to see a lot of Lego creations.
I enjoyed talking with others who had made some really cool stuff. And meeting Mariann Asanuma, a freelance Lego artist who had built models at Legoland for several years. I don’t yet have those kinds of skills but I hope one day to be able to make bigger and better models and scenes.
Among my favorites made by others: Sorcerer Mickey with a broom and two buckets of water, a little scene from M*A*S*H, the Staypuft Marshmallow Man and Ghostbusters, mini models from the game “We Rule,” all of the castles, a Tardis, and a mosaic version of Starry Starry Night.
When 4:30 pm Sunday rolled around, there was a mad dash to start dismantling everything. I packed away “Pizza Day” and removed my small car from PennLUG’s display. I could detach the green baseplates that filled in outer areas, take apart train tracks, etc. Took apart the stanchions we had set up on Friday night, removed stickers from the floor. I was really surprised just how quickly take down went. In two hours most of the Lego had been removed from the tables and packed into boxes. That’s when I hit the road to come home. There were still plenty of people to help take down the tables and pack the trailer.

I’m here at BrickFair, just outside of DC. What a treat to see lots of Lego creations and meet their builders!
BrickFair set-up at the PennLUG table has been going on since Thursday morning. By the time I arrived in the afternoon, a lot was already done. Little did I know just how much more was going to happen before my eyes. The basic structure of the layout was indeed done. However, a street in the back, subway, windfarm, swamp, farm, hazardous train wreck, and all the little details like minifigs, street lamps, landscaping, trains and trolleys were still to be added.
If I tried to set this up at my house, I think it would take up my entire living and dining rooms and then some. The few photos here really don’t do it justice.
This being my first Lego-related event, I’ve been mostly hanging out at PennLUG’s area. Every once in a while, I’m given an easy, small task. I’ve added minifigs, helped with landscaping, and taped down the stanchions to keep the public 2 feet away from the table. Otherwise, I’ve just watched the goings on.
My own creation (MOC), is at another table just across the way. I have taken a few people over there to look at it together, but otherwise haven’t spent any time there. But I’ll be there for most, if not all, of the public hours beginning today. I’m looking forward to talking with people and enjoying their reactions.
So far, so good. More to come later.

BrickFair is coming
Less than a week until @BrickFair just outside of DC. I’m starting to get excited… I’m taking “Pizza Day on the Death Star.” It should be a fun weekend of events for Adult Fans of Lego and the public. I am making a list of the sets I plan to get while I’m there but preparing to actually get a few more than planned.
Come to the Dulles Expo Center on August 6 & 7 and visit me! Looks like the table where I’ll be is actually near the exit. Bummer…wish it was closer to the entrance.

New Sets
#Lego Shop@Home has released new @Starwars Lego sets! Several cool sets are out and I’m starting to salivate. Some will need to be on sale to be worth buying- their price:piece ratio isn’t that great. New minifigs of Captain Panaka, Ewoks, Savage Oppress, Sebulba, and Darth Maul among others will be added to my collection. Just as soon as I save up some more money…

In preparation for @BrickFair in August (at the Dulles Expo Center near DC), I decided to make business cards with all my social media information. They printed darker than I anticipated so I’ll likely redesign before ordering another batch. The cool part that doesn’t show up online is the use of a spot UV coating on the SW LegoLover logo above the info and the red laser blasts from the X-Wing on the back. When you tilt the cards, those parts are shinier and pop out a bit more. Lastly, I round two of the corners with a paper punch (upper left and lower right) for a more unique look.
(Want to do that on your own cards, check out www.overnightprints.com.)

Wizard World Philadelphia wrapup
I really enjoyed meeting @AlainaHuffman and @Julia_Benson from SGU Stargate Universe when they dropped by our PennLUG booth to see the Lego version of their ship, Destiny (see previous post with photo). They were both so nice, gracious and all around pleasant people that I had to stop by their booth on Sunday, just to say “Hi.” (Thanks for sharing some popcorn!) I was even more thrilled when Ms. Huffman retweeted my photo post with the comment, “That’s why we couldn’t get home…Destiny is made of Lego! Who knew.” Very cool.
All of the fans who dropped by our booth throughout the weekend were a lot of fun to meet. They enjoyed our reproductions in Lego from Doctor Who, Green Lantern, Thor, X-Men, Harry Potter, Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars and more. It was a treat to watch people walking by, catch a glimpse of something on our table, and come back for a closer look. Comments included “cool,” “I like that,” “wow,” and “that’s so funny!”
I managed to get a photo of a Stormtrooper in front of my “Pizza Day on the Death Star” scene which made my day. I was too intimidated to stop Emperor Palpatine for a photo…I didn’t want to receive a dose of Force lightning if he didn’t think eating a Lego turkey drumstick was funny. Oh well, maybe next time…
Thank you all for a wonderful weekend!
